Two quotes for the same broken spring can be years apart in what you actually get. These are the questions that show the difference — ask them of us and of whoever else you call.
- Will they look at the door before they price it? A firm number over the phone, before anyone has seen the door, is a number that changes in your driveway. Spring size depends on the door's actual weight and travel; a quote given without that is a guess with a revision built into it. Ask for the price after the look, and ask whether the look costs anything.
- Do they quote the repair against the replacement? Replacement pays a great deal better than a spring change. That does not make it wrong, but it does mean the reasoning should be in front of you: which sections are damaged, what the door weighs now, how old the opener is, and what a repair actually buys you in years. If replacement is the only option offered on a door that still runs, ask why.
- What spring are they putting in, and how many cycles is it rated for? Springs are rated in cycles — one open and one close. A 10,000-cycle spring on a door that runs six times a day is roughly four and a half years; a 25,000-cycle spring is a decade. Two quotes can look identical and be years apart in life. Ask for the cycle rating in writing, and be suspicious of anyone who cannot tell you.
- Do they test the safety reversal before they leave? Every automatic residential opener sold since 1993 has to reverse when something is under the door. After any spring, cable, or opener work, the balance and both entrapment-protection systems should be tested and the result told to you. If nobody mentions safety devices on the way out, they were not checked.
